Members of the Virginia House and Senate representing Loudoun County were at Tuesday night's School Board meeting to present resolutions of recognition for two long-time members of the school system.

Senator Mark R. Herring (D-33) presented the board with a resolution recognizing Peter Fulcer, the former director of career and adult education and one of the founding members of the Loudoun Education Foundation, along with Fred Flemming and other members of the School Board, in 1991.

The resolution commended Fulcer to his years of dedication and service to the foundation, largely managing the organizations finances as treasurer.

"Over the years, Peter Fulcer has wisely sought to solidify the Foundation's financial status and to exercise prudence in its expenditures in order to preserve the Foundation's ability to fulfill its mission of serving the Loudoun County students and teachers," read the resolution introduced to the Senate by Herring.

Fulcer said he was "totally unprepared" to receive the recognition that evening, having been set to attend his grandson's baseball game, and thanked the board and gathered legislators, including Delegates Tom Rust (R-86) and Tag Greason (R-32).

Rust then took the podium to present Josh Lunsford with a resolution recognizing his father, the late J. Michael Lunsford, who served as the director of the school system's transportation department for 24 years.

Lunsford died last July after suffering a stroke. He began his career with the school system in 1967 as a student bus driver at Loudoun County High School, before going on to serve as a computer operator from 1972 to 1975, a computer programmer from 1975 to 1979, transportation coordinator from 1979 to 1986, and transportation operations supervisor from 1986 until 1995, at which point he assumed the role of director of transportation.

"What has made Loudoun County Public Schools great is not the master's or doctorate degrees. It is the good people we employed from the get go. In my father's name, I ask that we keep that in mind as we do business," Josh Lunsford, who serves as the school system's fleet services manager, said.

Board member Robert F. DuPree (Dulles), who will represent the middle school in South Riding named in Lunsford's honor, said the board "could spend the entire evening talking about how much Mike meant to Loudoun County Public Schools and the scores of thousands of students he touched over the years." He said Lunsford would be proud to see the activity taking place at that school as it prepares to open in the fall of 2011.
